Few things inspire awe in us like nature does. Her landforms and open blue sky offer us sweeping views and a sense of wonder. That’s why taking pictures while in the great outdoors is both one of my favourite pastimes and professional specialties. Let’s look at what makes a great outdoor photo other than some smiling and very photogenic people.
The right backdrop
A photo is really made by the scenery that lies behind it off in the distance. That’s why great outdoor photos need to have a beautiful backdrop. The area in which we live offers sweeping views of nature that seem to stretch forever. Hills, flatlands, lakes, and open sky are some of my favourites. When done properly, they accentuate the subject or sometimes stand in stark contrast to it. Either way, it really makes the photo for me.
Unsuspecting subjects
Photographing animals in nature is a treat. Catching them in their natural habitat is not only beautiful, but it also reminds us of just how big and diverse this world really is. The best thing about taking shots of them is that they have no idea what we are doing! People tend to pose, look uneasy or unnatural, and cheese for the camera (nothing wrong with that!), but our furry friends are as natural as they come.
History
If I am not taking a photo of an animal in their own habitat, then I am on the hunt for some history. There are a lot of great things to see in Canada from our past. Old buildings, monuments, or ruins make for some of the most breath-taking photos. The right shots can be thought-provoking or inspiring, and capturing the right piece of history on a camera is a way to make it last forever.
I love taking pictures of families, children, sports, and the social events that make life so great, but I have to say that taking shots in nature is one of my most beloved pastimes and one of the best things about my job.
