Newborn photography is a beautiful way to commemorate those special moments early in your child’s life. With all the responsibilities of being a new parent, it’s easy to let your newborn grow up without much documentation—before you know it, your child will be a teenager and you won’t have any photos to remember them as a baby!

Luckily, professional newborn photography is a great way to capture the intimate and beautiful moments between you and your newborn child. Babies are unpredictable and can become easily agitated, especially in unfamiliar situations such as photoshoots. If your child becomes uncomfortable or upset during your photography session, here are some tips and tricks to help sooth them.

Play White Noise

White noise has been known to lull babies into a calm and relaxed state. The light buzz of a hairdryer on the lowest setting can often grab a baby’s attention and help to calm them down. There are even apps available for download that can play noises that are soothing to babies to help your newborn photoshoot go as smoothly as possible.

Use a Scarf or Shawl

Wrapping your baby in a scarf or shawl is not only a great way to keep them comfortable and calm; it also helps to contain their movement so your photographer can get the best shots possible.  Make sure not to wrap your baby too tightly however, as this can cause discomfort and make it difficult for the photographer to capture a clear image.

Make Sure Your Baby is Full

Babies will cry and get upset when they’re hungry, so it’s a good idea to schedule your photoshoot after a routine feeding time so you can ensure that your newborn is full and satisfied during the shoot. If your child becomes uncomfortable part way through the photoshoot, suggest a feeding break if necessary. It’s better to ensure your baby is happy during the photoshoot than trying to continue while they’re upset.
